What to Wear & Bring during Winter

Walk with Cham during WINTER.

For Filipinas like us, it's no surprise that most of us (like me) are not used to the winter season. Living in a tropical country the coldest we can get is when we travel to Tagaytay or Baguio where temperature drops to 14 degrees depending on the season you're visiting. For my year ender trip, my family decided to spend the holidays at South Korea which has four seasons including winter. Winter season in South Korea occurs from the start of December until early March and since we went there from December- January, yes it was our first winter wonderland experience it had a temperature between 5 to -7 degrees. brrr.

I've prepared for months for this trip not just because it was so exciting to dress up for winter (most especially if it's your first time) but because I'm the type of person who shivers easily #tropicalgirlproblems so I researched and planned all my outfits.

Here are my pointers that you can consider when traveling during winter.

Layering is the key
Layering can make your body feel warmer, yes it will be heavier and you will have a hard time dressing up but trust me you'll thank yourself later on when you get out of your house.

Top should be at least 3 layers
First layer | thin long sleeves
Second layer | a fleece or sweater
Third layer | thermal jacket or trenchcoat

Bottom should be at least 2 layers
First layer | tights or leggings
Third layer | pants

Uniqlo's HEATTECH
A cutting-edge fabric to combat the cold, Uniqlo's Heattech garments can be as thin as other normal inner wear making it perfect for layering. They have tons of styles and types to choose from- Heattech inner wear, fleece jacket, thermal jacket, socks, leggings, tights, cap, gloves and scarf. I bought turtleneck inner tops, fleece jackets, tights and a thermal jacket.

Winter Accessories
Adding winter accessories to your get-up will make you feel much warmer (it can also compliment your whole winter fashion statement)

Winter Shoes  - I have purple and beige that I used for winter activities. I bought it during my trip to Taiwan around 3 years ago, my Mama bought one at Terranova for around P500 #cheapo

Scarf - Buy the wide and thick ones where you can cover your whole neck and even your mouth.

Earmuffs - This will protect your ears from the cold (I usually wear mine at night when it gets insanely chilly) I have two - 1 brown which I bought in Beijing and 1 white which I bought at Terranova on sale.

Cap/Bonnet/Hat - My head can tolerate the cold as compared to my other body parts nonetheless I have around 4 different colors and type of head warmers just to be safe.

Gloves - It was just so unfair when locals can tolerate the biting cold and not wear gloves at all. As for me, my hands couldn't tolerate the cold so I had to wear gloves most of the time. It's a bit of a hassle that my gloves aren't touchscreen sensitive that I had to remove it when using my touch screen phone. So my tip for you is buy touchscreen sensitive gloves.

If you'd like to see my everyday winter outfit, here's a rundown of my #WOOTD

Day 1 | Christmas Look
Since it was Christmas day, I decided to be more festive and wear red, I was thinking of complimenting it with a green scarf for a more Christmasy look but I figured it was too much. hohoho.

Day 2 | Winter Wanderland
For a hardcore winter outfit I wore three Heattech layering all from Uniqlo. I had this thermal jacket since last year which I wore during my trip to the Great Wall of China.

Day 3 | Houndstooth Outfit
I have a thing for black and white and this houndstooth coat caught my attention when I went shopping at Forever21. Paired it with a white fur beret for that ultimate stylish look.

Day 4 | FurDay
Any kind of fur can warm you down hence the reason why grabbed this black fur coat from a sale rack in H&M. This was the warmest coat out of all my outfits. To break the monotony I wore #GSunnies in Cotton Candy.

Day 5 | All Beige Everything
For another day at the snow, I wore a long trench coat to fully cover my body, winter bonnet (the warmest from all my head gears), thick scarf, winter boots, earmuffs and gloves. I realized the brown leather gloves were not as warm as compared to the thick ones I have.

That day was a bit warm in Seoul so no coat for me just a hoodie given by Mike (3 layers of top of course). I was able to skip the head gear, gloves and earmuffs too #feelinglocal

Other Things you Need to Bring
1. Medicine & Vitamins - It's really important to bring a first-aid kit with you. Because of the erratic temperature, taking vitamins and medicine helped us a lot in fighting flu. I had with me Bioflu, Berocca, Strepsils, Tiger Balm, Giga Massage Rub & eye drop.

2. Lotion/Moisturizer - Your skin will get extremely dry and will lose its moisture so lotions and facial moisturizers are your skin's best friend during winter.

3. Lip balm - same as the skin, your lips will get dry and will most likely crack resulting to a serious windburn so make sure to bring your best bet lip balm or better to bring a petroleum jelly. In my case, I never had dry lips compared to my family, I guess because I used Mac Lipstick in Lustre to keep my lippies moist all the time.

***Oh by the way please don't forget to add luggage allowance. We have 20 kilos each for 10 days.

    1. It's really up to you but if you will using it more than once, buy a coat with neutral colors - black and beige are your best bet. Make sure it's thick and warm! Buy Heattech inner wears from Uniqlo, it would help a lot!

  19. Oversized coats help you get cozy during that chilly plane flight. Although any coat can be oversized, there are some more popular styles trending this winter.

  20. The dress is beautiful and looks great on you! My color is turquoise. I think it complements my hair and skin tone (or so I've been told), but it's also a color I just enjoy wearing.

  25. I love this look on you! You manage to make this look both comfy & polished at the same time! I have a question about leggings for anyone that might have input. I wonder if anyone has compared the leggings with Glamour Farms to the ones styled here? Or if any one has other suggestions about leggings – specifically for someone who is petite height By the way I did just get the AHH mazing full length shaper from Glamour Farms & it is awesome! I wanted to try the leggings – but wondered about the length etc.
